How Missouri Child Support is Calculated

1. Combined Monthly Income

The Missouri child support calculator starts by adding both parents’ monthly gross incomes. This includes salaries, wages, commissions, bonuses, dividends, and other income sources. Missouri uses an “Income Shares” model, which assumes children should receive the same proportion of parental income they would have received if the parents lived together.

2. Basic Support Obligation

Based on the combined income and number of children, the calculator applies Missouri’s Schedule of Basic Support Obligations. This schedule estimates the amount parents would typically spend on their children in an intact household. For 2024, the schedule ranges from $1,018 monthly for one child with combined income of $5,000 to $3,377 for three children with combined income of $20,000.

3. Parenting Time Adjustment

Missouri accounts for the time each parent spends with the children. The calculator reduces support when the paying parent has substantial overnight visits. This recognizes that parents directly cover expenses during their parenting time. For example, at 110 overnights (approximately 30%), support might be reduced by 25%.

4. Additional Expenses

Childcare costs, health insurance premiums, and extraordinary medical expenses are added to the basic support amount. These are typically divided between parents in proportion to their incomes. Missouri defines extraordinary medical expenses as unreimbursed costs exceeding $100 per child per year.

5. International Considerations

While this calculator uses Missouri guidelines, many countries follow similar principles. The United Kingdom uses a similar percentage-based system, while Australia considers both parents’ incomes and time spent with children. Canada’s Federal Child Support Guidelines resemble Missouri’s approach but with different calculation tables.
